Wht role did TV play in the presidency of Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy?
The new-fangled contraption allowed everyone in the country to follow the debate process. The television also played a role in politics of the time because voters could see and hear the people they were voting for. Kennedy won because the general public found him more good-looking than Nixon, and Nixon won because he was considered more good-looking than Johnson. It was played out much like high school politics, the novelty causing more of a popularity contest than a Presidential race. Don't believe me? Look again. We still do that. Do you think that if the general public knew what Lincoln had looked like, he would have been elected? Or Fat ol' Roosevelt? Photos in papers of the time left MUCH to the imagination, and several ugly presidential candidates actually had other people pose as them for pictures. If only we still chose our leader based upon ethics and their capability for the job, instead of how much hair is on their head, or how young they look.
